Chinese university societies linked to Beijing are “posing” as normal student associations while harassing pro-Hong Kong democracy activists and attempting to shut down dissent, a report has claimed.

A network of societies around the country are alleged to have spied on students while attempting to erode debate on issues such as the Chinese repression of the Muslim Uighur population in Xinjiang province.

Their umbrella organisation, the Chinese Students and Scholars Association in the UK (CSSAUK), is effectively a branch of the communist state overseen by Chinese diplomats, according to the report by the Henry Jackson Society.

The think tank’s report, released today, details how CSSAUK also acts as the overseas directorate for a wing of the United Work Front Department (UFWD), Beijing’s global influence and
