Universities have taken millions from Huawei despite telecoms ban
British universities have taken millions of pounds in funding from Huawei since it was banned from the country’s sensitive networks over security fears, it has been revealed.
Some 46 universities — including Oxford, Cambridge and Cranfield, Britain’s top defence university — have brought in between £122 million and £156 million in funding from Chinese sources, new data shows. Between 30 and 33 per cent of that funding came from entities linked to either the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) or groups sanctioned by the United States.
The figures were revealed through freedom of information requests from the think tank Civitas, which found the universities had received a total of £13 million from Huawei Technologies and its subsidiaries after it was banned from involvement in Britain’s telecoms
