New lead in missing child case after 53 years

A potential new witness has emerged in the case of the British toddler Cheryl Grimmer, who disappeared in Australia more than 50 years ago.

Cheryl, three, vanished in 1970 from a shower block at Fairy Meadow Beach, fifty miles south of Sydney, shortly after her family had emigrated from Bristol.

Her body has never been found. Police believe she was kidnapped but the case has yet to be solved.

The potential new witness was seven years old when Cheryl disappeared, but said the memory of a teenage boy carrying away a small child was “etched in my mind”.

Speaking anonymously on the BBC podcast Fairy Meadow, he claimed he saw an adolescent male leaving the beach’s female changing rooms, carrying a toddler.
