Hundreds behind bars in mafia crackdown
With over 300 defendants in the dock and lasting almost three years, the biggest mafia trial in Italy for 30 years has finally drawn to a close with the convictions of a former senator, two police officers and 200 mobsters.
A court in Calabria, in Italy’s far south, convicted Giancarlo Pittelli, a former senator with Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia party, and two police officers on accusations of complicity with the local ‘Ndrangheta mafia.
The crime bosses Saverio Razionale and Domenico Bonavota were handed 30-year sentences, with 29 others receiving sentences of more than 20 years, part of a total of 2,200 years of prison time handed down by the court.
