The widow of an Italian man linked to the mafia was murdered and fed to pigs by mobsters after she posted a photograph of herself with a new partner, investigators claim.

Maria Chindamo, 43, a mother of three, died because she did not follow a mafia custom requiring women to stay loyal to their husbands even after their deaths, according to Nicola Gratteri, an Italian magistrate.

Chindamo vanished from her farm in Calabria in southern Italy in 2016 after separating from her husband, Vincenzo Puntoriero, whose family has been linked by prosecutors to the ’Ndrangheta, one of the world’s most powerful cocaine-trafficking mobs.

Puntoriero took his own life after the separation. Chindamo started a relationship with a police officer and enrolled at university, but she
