When he was a schoolboy in the early 1980s, his classmates called the dark haired, blue-eyed boy who had a troubled relationship with his parents “El Loco” — the crazy one — thanks to his loud outbursts against teachers. Forty years on, now 53, Javier Milei’s rebellious eccentricity has become a well-placed lightning-rod for a wave of political anger in Argentina against the entire establishment.
Seen as a total political outsider earlier this year, he shocked the country in August when he won the pre-election primary contest. Then he seemed set to fade again, coming second to the left-wing economy minister, Sergio Massa, in the first round of the elections in October.
Now, of course, Milei is president-elect, and his wild ride is just beginning.
