I always thought nothing could shock me more than the discovery that Nigel Farage and I were born in the same year, 1964. The fact that he arrived first, in April, four months before me, was of little comfort. Four months is not nearly long enough to claim distance. We were, are and always will be members of the same school year and same age cohort, subject to the same cultural frame of reference, the fag end of the baby boom, just before Gen X.
