Mid-November, and much to my surprise, I’m still swimming outdoors (albeit in water heated to a balmy 24C, although it sure doesn’t feel that warm), three times a week minimum, in my local lido. And when I say local, I mean 300 yards away across the park. So there’s no excuse not to go really. Except, there is, because getting your kit off outside in 10C is bloody horrible. And then getting out of the pool after my customary half-mile is even worse. It’s a good incentive to stay in and do a few more lengths, actually.

Sometimes I go alone, sometimes with my son, Sam, mostly with my daughter, Rachel. Back in September, my wife came a couple of times too. And while Nicola
