More than 10,000 jobs are at risk across Britain’s train manufacturing sector as orders dry up following the scaling back of rail projects such as HS2, a top industry executive has warned.

Jim Brewin, Hitachi Rail’s chief director in the UK, sounded the alarm at a private meeting in Manchester last week in front of leading transport executives, union chiefs and metro mayors, according to details leaked to The Sunday Times.

That came as rail minister Huw Merriman questioned the sense of bailing out the train-building sector, saying the UK was at “double the capacity” of manufacturing required by the country
