With the war in Ukraine preoccupying the West, little attention has been given to another chronic conflict in the heart of Europe that, yet again, threatens to spill over into violence and bloodshed. The widespread rioting in four Serb-majority towns of northern Kosovo, injuring dozens of Nato peacekeepers, has prompted the alliance to rush some 700 more troops to the region. They will join the 4,000-strong mission attempting to prevent Europe’s newest state from descending again into conflict. And with neighbouring Serbia, prompted by Moscow, renewing threats against a former province it still regards as its historic heartland, Nato is scrambling to contain the crisis.
