Schools ‘tying themselves in knots’ on trans issues

Amanda Spielman’s seven years as the head of Ofsted are the longest stint of any chief inspector. Those years have also been perhaps the most turbulent in the inspectorate’s history.

Among the many challenges have been how schools should approach trans issues. In her final interview before standing down in December, Spielman says the lack of government guidance on the matter has left head teachers in the firing line and schools “tying themselves in knots”.
