Police have dropped an investigation into allegations that Chris Packham broke the law when he sniffed goshawk chicks on the BBC.

The naturalist was accused of potentially breaching the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 by interfering with a protected species.

Packham, 62, had been celebrating the return of goshawks, a bird of prey, to breed. He was filmed with three chicks on The One Show. After the BBC1 programme was broadcast in summer, Hampshire police received a complaint from an amateur shooting enthusiast, who questioned whether the producers were licensed to disturb rare species.

The man, who did not wish to be identified, said licences were in place for the welfare of birds “for a very good reason”. Packham was potentially disturbing the birds,
