For Satya Nadella, the chief executive of Microsoft and a man who loves his cricket, the World Cup final between India and Australia was rudely interrupted by events nearer home. While he managed to tweet his congratulations to the Aussies on Sunday, most of his time was taken up addressing a boardroom drama in Silicon Valley that threatened the software powerhouse’s ambitions in artificial intelligence.
However, what started as a coup in OpenAI — as the board fired Sam Altman, its chief executive — would end up with Nadella staging an extraordinary coup of his own as Microsoft creamed off the top talent from the technology sector’s most exciting business.
