A watchdog has said that a Metropolitan Police firearms officer should face a disciplinary hearing after he “lawfully” shot dead a gangster in 2015.
The Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC) told Scotland Yard that the officer, identified only as W80, should face a disciplinary hearing for gross misconduct after Jermaine Baker was shot during an operation to stop him trying to free two prisoners being taken to court.
The Met said it was reviewing the decision by the IOPC and seeking legal advice on whether its request could be challenged. It is the second time that the IOPC has recommended that W80 face a disciplinary hearing. The previous one was challenged by the Met.
