Fans were shown little respect by the organisers during a shambolic start to the weekend but the race itself gave plenty of cause for optimism for the future

As the sun rose on Friday morning in Sin City, Formula 1 were down to their final chips. Their $700 million (£560 million) gamble on Las Vegas appeared to be close to going bust.
The Ferrari of Carlos Sainz had been extensively damaged after running over a loose drain cover, a known hazard of street tracks, and the Spaniard was lucky to walk away unscathed after the bottom of his car was ripped apart.
