Just Stop Oil activists smash glass on painting at National Gallery
Two Just Stop Oil activists smashed the glass cover of a painting at the National Gallery while other protesters from the group demonstrated near the Cenotaph.
Hanan Ameur, 22, and Harrison Donnelly, 20, were arrested on suspicion of criminal damage after hammers were used to break the glass covering the Rokeby Venus, a 17th-century painting of the nude Roman goddess, on Monday morning.
The painting by Velázquez, who is regarded as the leading artist of the Spanish Golden Age, was attacked in 1914 by the suffragette Mary Richardson after Emmeline Pankhurst, the leader of the movement, was arrested in Glasgow before addressing a public meeting of the Women’s Social and Political Union. It was later restored.
