Hamas gunmen kill soldier in West Bank checkpoint clash
Hamas claimed responsibility for a gun attack on Israeli security forces south of Jerusalem, raising new fears about an escalation of the conflict.
An Israeli soldier died of his wounds hours after the attack at a West Bank checkpoint, during which three Palestinian gunmen were shot dead. Police said the militants were planning an attack inside Jerusalem and opened fire on security forces when they were stopped at the checkpoint.
In a statement, Hamas’s military wing, the al-Qassam Brigades, said the attack was “in revenge for the blood of the martyrs in Gaza”.
The attack outside Jerusalem came as Israeli soldiers continued their search for evidence of a Hamas command centre in the al-Shifa hospital in Gaza. “Soldiers are proceeding one building at a
