The family business sector is a true British success story. Representing nine in ten private sector companies, employing almost 14 million people and generating nearly £2 trillion in turnover, family businesses are the engines of our economy and the bedrock of regional communities. At the heart of this success story is a focus on the long term — planning from one generation to the next, taking decisions that serve the business, its employees, their communities and society at large.

In my own family firm, my father Sir Peter Rigby started the business in 1975. Now, with three generations of Rigbys involved, our longevity, ability and ambition have contributed to where we are today. We are a top ten wholly family-owned UK business, employing more than
