A firearms officer who shot dead a gangster eight years ago while he was preparing to help two prisoners to escape could be sacked despite not facing criminal charges.

The Metropolitan Police marksman, known as W80, killed Jermaine Baker with a single bullet in December 2015. He is expected to find out within the week whether he will face a gross misconduct hearing, which could cost him his job. The prospect of a hearing comes after dozens of firearms police at the Met stepped back from their duties following the decision to charge an officer with the murder of the unarmed 23-year-old Chris Kaba in September.
