Animal charity threatens action over lobster boiling
An animal rights charity is threatening to take legal action against the government for failing to move against the widespread practice of boiling lobsters alive, which the charity says is illegal under existing laws.
The Animal Law Foundation has written to ministers demanding that they implement welfare laws which stipulate that creatures deemed to be sentient should not suffer unnecessary pain or distress at the time of killing.
The government last year included lobsters and crabs among those creatures recognised as being sentient and therefore capable of feeling pain after an independent review reported that crustaceans possess advanced nervous systems capable of sensing and reacting to stimuli.
