Andy Murray has withdrawn from the Davis Cup finals after suffering a shoulder injury before Great Britain’s quarter-final against Serbia on Thursday.

Britain’s chances of glory in tennis’s version of the World Cup had already suffered a significant blow last month when Dan Evans was forced to pull out because of a calf injury. The British No 2 had played a starring role for the team this year in singles and doubles.

Now, Britain are down to the bare bones in Málaga after Murray hurt his right shoulder during a practice session on Tuesday. While it is understood to be a minor issue, the 36-year-old British No 3 concluded on Friday that he is not fit enough to play next week and will instead focus
