The village army catching speeders — with police radar guns

Volunteers backed by local forces are taking to the streets to tackle problem driving, although some motorists have accused them of vigilantism and spying

In the next few days, 29 motorists will receive warning letters from police reprimanding them for exceeding the speed limit on the cramped streets of a Cornish village.

Despite being accused of breaking the law — one of the cars was logged doing 36mph in a 20mph limit — these drivers will not be fined, will receive no points on their licences, and will not be asked to attend a driver awareness course.

On the day they were caught, Tuesday, November 7, there were no police patrols in the former mining village of Chacewater.

Instead the drivers were clocked by a former bank manager, a retired dental nurse, an engineer and a former photographer who are part of an army of thousands of volunteers signed
