The Monty Python musical Spamalot is back on Broadway, which this week reminded Eric Idle, the show’s writer, of when he got his first Tony nomination. It wasn’t for Spamalot, which won a Tony in 2005, nor indeed for anything he had done. Somehow Idle’s address had been confused with someone else and he was surprised to receive an invitation that said “Congratulations! You have been nominated for Best Actress on Broadway!” Idle, of course, saw the error. He had, it’s true, earned plaudits in the Batley Townswomen’s Guild’s Battle of Pearl Harbor but at that point he had never been to Broadway.
