The head of the NHS has urged female surgeons who suffer sexism or harassment to “speak up” and challenge unacceptable behaviour, amid suggestions that the health service is facing a MeToo moment.

Amanda Pritchard, chief executive of the NHS in England, praised the bravery of women who had spoken of their experiences of sexual assault and discrimination. She said senior doctors and managers must do more to stamp out misogyny in operating theatres after female surgeons highlighted a “boys’ club mentality” in the profession.

“There should be no place in the NHS for sexism or harassment,” she said. “I urge anyone subjected to this treatment to speak up.”
