The Spain midfielder Gavi seems almost certain to miss Euro 2024 after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in his country’s win over Georgia on Sunday.

His club, Barcelona, said on Monday that the 19-year-old had also sustained an injury to the meniscus in his right knee and would have surgery “in the coming days”.

Gavi limped from the field in tears after taking a hard impact to his knee in the 24th minute of the 3-1 victory in Valladolid, Spain’s final qualifying match for next summer’s European Championship in Germany. Initially he had tried to keep playing for a few minutes but appeared to hurt the same leg while trying to control the ball and immediately signalled to the bench that he could not continue.
