President Yoon’s government will ban the consumption of dog meat under pressure from South Korea’s growing number of pet owners, including his wife.

Yoon, who began a state visit to Britain on Monday this week, had resisted calls to end the traditional practice in deference to the dwindling number of elderly farmers, slaughterhouse owners and restaurateurs who profit from the trade. But after criticism from animal protection organisations and appeals from his wife, the president’s ruling People Power Party (PPP) has announced that it will pass laws banning the trade by 2027.
