Plans to build a 300ft replica of the Las Vegas Sphere in London’s Olympic Park have been blocked by the mayor of London amid concerns over excessive light pollution.

Sadiq Khan rejected a proposal by Madison Square Garden Entertainment for the giant eyeball-shaped dome following a backlash from people living nearby.

The venue would be a copy of the $2 billion American sphere which has been the venue for concerts by U2 since September.

In March, the London Legacy Development Corporation approved building a sphere on empty land between Stratford station and the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in east London. The New York-based company bought the 4.7-acre site which was last used as a temporary coach park during the 2012 London Olympics.

Khan, however, overruled
