A Russian artist has been jailed for seven years for replacing supermarket price labels with messages against the war in Ukraine, in the latest sign of escalating authoritarianism under President Putin.

Alexandra Skochilenko, 33, was found guilty of knowingly spreading false information about the Russian army after a pensioner reported her to police.

She had replaced five small price tags in a Perekrestok supermarket in St Petersburg last year with notes that mimicked the labels and had captions such as: “Weekly inflation has reached the maximum since 1998 because of our military actions in Ukraine. Stop the war.”

Another message said: “The Russian army bombed an art school in Mariupol. About 400 people had taken refuge in it from shelling.” A third read: “Putin
