We will cut taxes over time, Rishi Sunak says before autumn statement

Prime minister cautions in speech that any tax cuts will be made in a ‘responsible way’

Rishi Sunak has said that his government “can and will” cut taxes, but tempered expectations before Wednesday’s autumn statement by admitting that “we can’t do everything at once”.

In an effort to galvanise Conservative MPs pushing for giveaways on Wednesday, Sunak claimed credit for halving inflation and said: “We can begin the next phase and turn our attention to cutting tax.” He added that tax cuts would be one of his five new longer-term pledges.

Sunak refused to be drawn on specific measures to be unveiled by the chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, including on whether tax band thresholds could be unfrozen after allegations that fiscal drag has been used as a stealth tax.
