Rapist finally deported after UK agrees to pay for hotel and therapy

A gang rapist has finally been deported to Somalia, but only after ministers offered concessions including a luxury hotel stay and a personal therapy package to secure his expulsion.

Yaqub Ahmed, 34, whose deportation flight was thwarted by passengers in 2018, was eventually taken back to Somalia in August this year on a chartered plane.

He cost taxpayers up to £1 million in legal, prison and deportation costs, The Mail on Sunday reported, including a care package and 14-week hotel stay on his arrival in Somalia.

Ahmed dragged his deportation fight through at least 24 tribunal or court hearings, in front of 20 or more judges, while his lawyers attempted to keep their names secret. His appeal was aided by Mary Harper, the BBC’s Africa
