Internet shoppers have been warned to be alert to the growing threat of “porch piracy” this Black Friday as police data showed parcel thefts surged in November and December.

Freedom of information requests to Britain’s police forces show that reports of stolen deliveries are rising as criminals take advantage of courier companies adopting “single-delivery” strategies that see packages left in “safe spaces” if no one is in.

The number of parcels stolen in the past year has jumped 57 per cent compared to a year earlier, the data shows.

The research also found that more than a quarter of parcel thefts occurred in November and December as home deliveries increased because of Black Friday and online Christmas shopping.
