The future of OpenAI was in the balance last night as the overwhelming majority of staff threatened to leave the ChatGPT creator unless the board resigned and the company reappointed Sam Altman as chief executive, reversing a dramatic boardroom coup.

Employees, investors and even the new interim chief executive spoke out against the way in which OpenAI’s executive committee had handled the situation, as the reason for Altman’s shock firing remained a mystery.

Ilya Sutskever, the chief technology officer and one of the four board members responsible for the plot to oust Altman, even apologised for the weekend’s events. “I deeply regret my participation in the board’s actions. I never intended to harm OpenAI,” he said.
