Britain may soon make environmentally friendly bombs and missiles if advanced talks between a pioneering Edinburgh chemical engineering firm and defence contractors make progress.

NiTech Solutions, an award-winning tech firm founded by a Chinese engineer living in Scotland, has found a more energy-efficient way of making the chemicals that act as explosives and propellants for arms that it says will ensure that production in the UK is both green and economically viable.

Its process has already been endorsed by Croda, which is using the system to produce an agent used in cleaning detergents at its plants in Rawcliffe Bridge, near Goole, East Yorkshire. The FTSE 100 chemicals giant has found that the process can slash its carbon emissions by 60 per cent and electricity use
