Yair Lapid, the leader of the opposition in Israel, has called for the “immediate” replacement of Binyamin Netanyahu as prime minister despite the conflict with Hamas.

“We need to replace the prime minister during the fighting. The government is functioning and we can’t manage a prolonged war with a prime minister whom the public doesn’t trust,” he said in a television interview.

Lapid, a former prime minister himself, said that rather than holding another election, which would be Israel’s sixth in five years, a new leader should be appointed from Netanyahu’s Likud party. He said that many of the opposition parties would join the new government immediately.
