The middle classes are partly to blame for the rise in shoplifting, according to the chairman of Marks & Spencer.

Archie Norman said that well-to-do shoppers are being tempted to walk out without paying for items when self-checkout scanners fail to properly register everything in their baskets.

“With the reduction of service you get in a lot of shops, a lot of people think: ‘This didn’t scan properly, or it’s very difficult to scan these things through and I shop here all the time, it’s not my fault, I’m owed it’,” he said. “You see it with the self-checkouts, there’s a little bit of that creeping in.”
