The highs and lows of golf were summed up as Nicolai Hojgaard finished top of the metaphorical tree at the DP World Tour Championship — whereas Joost Luiten lost three clubs up a real one during one of the sport’s more memorable head-scrambling cameos.

Smarting from an errant tee shot on the 8th hole during the Race to Dubai climax at Jumeirah Golf Estates, the Dutchman tossed his driver in anger, only for it to become snared in the branches of a tree. He tried to dislodge the club with a stick, before deciding the best option was to attack it with more clubs.

With the plot lost, two irons duly followed and became stuck too. Luiten then kicked his bag in anger, turned the
