Dame Hilary Mantel, the only British author to win the Booker prize twice, has died aged 70 after a stroke.

Mantel won the award for Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies, the first two instalments of her Thomas Cromwell trilogy, which recreated the Tudor court of Henry VIII. Her publisher said Mantel had left behind an “incredible literary legacy”.

The author, who was acclaimed by many as the greatest British writer of her generation, suffered from ill health for many years, having been diagnosed with endometriosis at 27. She had recently embarked on a new novel.

A statement from HarperCollins said Mantel died “suddenly yet peacefully yesterday surrounded by close friends and family” after a stroke.
