Climate set to warm by ‘devastating’ 3C, UN warns

Huge gap between emissions plans and the world’s 1.5C target, report concludes

The world is on track for almost 3C of global warming this century, the UN has found less than a fortnight before the Cop28 climate conference in Dubai.

A UN Environment Programme (Unep) report exposed the huge gap between countries’ emissions plans and the world’s 1.5C climate target, finding that Earth is on course for 2.9C of global warming above pre-industrial levels.

Anne Olhoff, chief scientific editor of the report, said: “That would be devastating.” António Guterres, the UN secretary-general, has previously described such a prospect as “hellish”.

This year’s Emissions Gap report said that humanity must now cut emissions by an “unprecedented” 8.7 per cent every year this decade to avoid dangerous global warming above 1.5C. That would require a herculean effort. Even
