A former vice-chairman of the Conservative Party has accused ministers of reaching for the “lowest common denominator” in an attempt to stir up a culture war over climate change.

In a plea to Rishi Sunak, Chris Skidmore said that it was “not too late to do the right thing” and change course on net zero, after the prime minister vowed to slow down the UK’s journey towards the 2050 target.

Skidmore, the author of the government’s Net Zero Review and a former energy minister, claimed that ambitious net zero aims had been abandoned in favour of a short-term bid to win the next general election.
