To think that some suggested Carlos Alcaraz had perhaps landed a lasting psychological blow when he overcame Novak Djokovic in a five-set Wimbledon final in July. A dominant 6-3, 6-2 victory for Djokovic in the pair’s fifth meeting on Saturday night at the ATP Finals has comfortably put that fanciful notion to bed.

Of the 60 matches Djokovic has played this season, this was arguably his finest. Over the course of one hour and 28 minutes in Turin, the world No 1 produced a ruthless performance that showed his inner competitive fire still burns as bright as ever.
