Argentina’s biggest football clubs appeared to oppose the populist hard-right election candidate Javier Milei after a video of him calling for private ownership in the sport went viral.

Milei, a radical libertarian who believes that markets, including that for human organs, should be free, has made headlines with controversial statements about topics such as abortion rights and the country’s brutal dictatorship.

But in a country where football is akin to a religion, making an enemies of teams such as River Plate and Boca Juniors, who boast some of the most passionate fans in the world, could prove problematic before Sunday’s vote.
